The first tix of my Spring Gigs have arrived! Clapton & Winwood, 21st May @ Wembley Arena

Img_4024

Ah…Clapton & Winwood. I’ve seen Clapton twice and once was on his Blues tour supporting the “From the Cradle” album.

I have the recent Clapton/Winwood MSG live set. I was surprised how good it was. Actually, I was surprised how good Clapton was. In my opinion, Clapton now needs someone to push him…push him to play to his abilities…not God-like, but guitar-hero like.  In recent years, the “push” has brought him to Claptonian peaks: Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary, Clapton & Jeff Beck, Clapton & Winwood, Clapton & The Allman Brothers, Clapton and Derek Trucks, Clapton and Buddy Guy…

Looking forward to this go-round with Winwood.  Winwood knows Clapton and what buttons to push and knobs to turn. He does it from behind the organ and from behind the guitar. Winwood can play, dammit. His six string work is phenomenal. I ask you, if you are unfamiliar with Winwood’s guitar playing, to watch this eight minute Traffic vid from 1972. Hot Damn!

My good mate, The Kingfish (owner of Mojo Music in Sydney…my fave record shop), sold me this entire set on DVD. We watched it three times straight over a couple dozen beers. This isn’t the beers talking…Winwood takes flight.

Speaking of Clapton needing a push…here are two songs from Clapton’s guest spot with the Allman’s at last year’s Beacon run. Little Wing is jaw-drop material and wait until you hear him solo’ing in the middle of a Trucks/Haynes Fret Sandwich. Extra mustard, please.
Go to this link and download them. Oh what fun it is to be triple-whammied by the Clapton/Trucks/Haynes Trilogy…picking out who’s who is the fun part.  Tell me what you think:
Here is the entire Clapton part of the set list from that show:
  • Key to the Highway (Clapton vox)
  • Stormy Monday
  • Dreams
  • Why Does Love Have to be so Sad
  • Little Wing
  • Elizabeth Reed (you will be paralytic after this)
  • Layla (Clapton vox)
If you want the set, let me know and I will upload it.

I love how the ticket says, “no support”…no shit.

Judd, you’re the man! Can’t wait to hear the EC/ABB meltdown. I honestly thought that EC and SW were better at Crossroads than the later MSG DVD performance. I caught the pair again last June, on the same day that I returned from Bonnaroo. I’ll be catching ‘em one more time in June at Crossroads. I can’t wait.Trucks is my favorite Clapton button-pusher from recent times – they were absolutely electric when I saw them play together at Crossroads in 2007.As long as we’re speaking Clapton, you might want to add this to your purchase list. Just watched part of it last night on Blu-ray. Pretty awesome.http://snipurl.com/uryfm

first thing i noticed was the “no support” as well. love that.starts at 19:45. reminds me of spinal tap playing the airbase, “so that’s what, 50 hours?”

Ivan…50 hours, no problem. I can last…the punter will give up and I can take their front row seats!

@addictedtovinyl Your suggestions have not failed me yet today (bought “Road Tested” off iTune when I got home). I’ll check this out for sure. The worst part about living away from the States for the past 5+ years is all of the gigs I’ve missed out on. I used to do 2+ Allmans and Dylan shows a year. I’ve never been to a Bonaroo or a Cochella. I missed the Trucks/Clapton show when it came to Sydney. I had to travel that week! Crap!!!I really need to see the Derek Trucks Band. Their 2009 “Already Free” was my fave album of 2009.Please chug a beer and throw a few fist-pumps for me at the 6149…I mean, Crossroads Fest.

This seems like it would also be up your alley. I just got it in the mail – looks like the second disc is mostly audio-only, but the reviews say that the quality is solid! http://snipurl.com/us0tl

@addictedtovinyl Matt: funny you should suggest Free. I just download my first tune from them ever. I’m still not sold yet. I’ll give this a go for sure…Thx!

@jukebox65 Stacy: Whistle while you work…that is if you can whistle a solo that can rise above the collective geetar wailing of that collection of string-benders! Enjoy!

I’m more of a Paul Rodgers kinda dude – love his most recent Live in Glasgow DVD, as a matter of fact. I’m interested to give this Free disc a spin. Eagle Vision is really starting to mine the vaults of Murray Lerner, who seems to have recorded at least audio of everyone that played at Isle of Wight.

Derek Trucks resurrected Clapton’s career.@addictedtovinyl – got tix for Crossroads in June also. Will see you there.Steve Winwood is the man. Clapton couldn’t carry his balls in a paper bag. I listened to his record About Time constantly yesterday and didn’t get sick of it. It’s a masterpiece. The remastered edition has some scorching Winwood axe work on Dear Mr Fantasy and Voodoo Chile.Fun Fact: Winwood played organ on the original Hendrix Voodoo Chile.

Two more shows to add the London Gig List: Bettye Lavette (June) & Wilco (Sep)

Very jealous of your Wilco tix. They will be in Oz next month but the two Sydney shows sold out in an hour. Get this: the second show is at the DBT/Booker T. pub venue in Newtown, but those tix were only sold as bonus tix for the first 600 souls who bought tix for the main Sydney gig at The State Theatre. A 100% different gig, the following night — in a pub! They are the shit. And some lucky scalper is about to fleece me.

@horring The Factory…that is the name of that joint. Yeah, you can right close there. I am very excited for the Wilco gig. Hey, I should have seen them sooner. Lately I have been deep in their trax…loving it.
