Talking Old Soldiers…(Neil and Crosby strike an “old” pose)
When I saw this pic, I thought of the Bettye Lavette cover of the Elton John song, “Talking Old Soldiers”. Bettye sings the shit out of this song. She sings the shit out of every song she sings. She sticks her soul-finger into emotion’s open wound and wiggles it around until emotions got nothing left in the tank to give. She’s no steeler though…she’s a natural born sender.
I included Elton’s version here as well. I figured you need to hear how his floor gets mopped up…even though he does it justice it…Bettye wears the Blue Ribbon.
This pic also reminded me of a Neil and Willie tune. You’ll be tappin’ a toe and slappin’ a knee before you can say, “Trans”.
Fucking Neil…

p.s. thx to @ThrashersWheat for the lead on the new Neil set w/Daniel Lanois: http://bit.ly/96xVVG TW is the best neil site on the web
It seems like every few months, Neil is creating something. A new album? OK…my wallet and mind are open as set a french doors in a windstorm. It feels like the last few albums from Neil have been akin to someone cleaning out a junk drawer in the kitchen…lots of stuff…clutter. This next album (if the muse allows it) will be another line in the sand.
Elton gets his floor mopped!Looking forward to the Neil CD with Daniel Lanois. Love the work he did with Willie and Emmylou on Teatro<object height=”385″ width=”480″><param></param><param></param><param></param><embed allowfullscreen=”true” src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/Aur5KEaNtKc&hl=en_US&fs=1&” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” height=”385″ width=”480″></embed></object>

@ozzybeef Luke, I love “The Maker”. Back when I didn’t know all that much about Willie (the hits I knew, but the rich history I was short on) Teatro was my first proper wille album I bought. I wore it out. I am seeing him here in London in June. I’m seeing Bettye Lavette a week later. June is going to be special.
Ah, The Maker. One of the numerous things I love about Daniel Lanois is the obvious laid back comfort level he somehow instils in all the ‘big’ artists he produces. The film clip says it all. And check out the rhythm section (Lanois’ signature sound). Could they be any more relaxed, given the company they’re sharing? Oh Danny Boy . . .
@horring Yes, Kip…what I love about that clip is seeing how the “producer” gets involved. Lanois, Burnettt, Rubin, (Mutt) Lange…those guys impact the sound quite a bit. Sometimes i wonder if it is for good or ill…who’s album is it…?
Yep, agreed. All those blokes you mention bring their signature sound to everything they touch. We must assume, therefore, that the client is keen on adding that sound to their own mix.I’ve always wondered how Lanois’ process works. Do his clients have all their songs lined-up and buttoned-down before arriving at his studio? Or, do they just bring sketches and see what he has to offer????
@horring Yeah, Kip…I’m curious about that, too. As an artist, you either go there for inspiration or to have a career revival of sorts, right? You know you are going to get some of their sound going into it.I think they show up with half baked ideas and see what the producer du jour can add. T-Bone has been on fire lately: Jakob Dylan, Willie Nelson, the Crazy Heart Soundtrack…they all have his prints. The JD album sounds like a damn movie score!
